After graduating as a co-Valedictorian from Jackson High School I went on to graduate with honors in Psychology from The University of Michigan. I then pursued my medical degree in Detroit at Wayne State University. During my clinical years I was active in educating my medical school peers about domestic violence, including the need for physicians to ask about violence in the home, and recognize common signs of partner violence. During college, I volunteered to aid women who had survived domestic violence, and then continued volunteering in medical school and residency training.
I trained in Psychiatry at the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry in Kansas. The program emphasized the whole person; and the primacy of thoroughly knowing and understanding the patient as an individual.
The Menninger Clinic has consistently been rated one of the Top 10 Psychiatric Hospitals in the country. Their demand for excellence extended to the residents, who were taught by renowned experts in psychiatry (Glenn Gabbard, Kathryn Zerbe, and Peter Fonagy, to name a few).
After finishing training in Psychiatry, I chose to head for the warmth and beauty of San Diego. i worked for Psychiatric Centers at San Diego, in both office and hospital settings, starting in 2002. Ten years later, I shifted gears to go into practice on my own.
I have a special interest in psychotherapy. My preferred psychotherapy approaches are: psychodynamic, existential, and mindfulness/ ACT. Many of my patients are glad to have a psychiatrist who can also be their psychotherapist. I am honored to be able to provide these services; and I thoroughly enjoy helping my patients reach their full potential through psychotherapy.
I am a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). I have also completed the Postpartum Support International training, with specific training in Pharmacotherapy (Perinatal Mental Health Certification PMH-C)
Commonly Treated Illnesses:
Mood Disorders (Bipolar Disorder and Major Depression)
Anxiety Disorders (including PTSD, Panic Disorder, Generalized Anxiety and OCD)
Women’s Issues (pregnancy, postpartum, perimenopause)
Adjustment Disorders
Insomnia
